The town of Johnson was impacted by multiple events since the Covid pandamic. First, the Vermont State College system was impacted by the national movement from in person instruction to remote instruction. Because of this transition and high tuition, it became obvious that the state of Vermont had too many campuses and not enough students. The Vermont State College system decided at that time to move some of Johnson's most popular majors to other campuses to bolster the student population at those campuses. Together, this caused the student population at the Johnson campus to drop from approximately 2,000 students to 225 and severly impacted the towns' economy.

Shortly thereafter, in 2023, Johnson was inundated by a 500-year flood that destroyed homes and businesses - for a time we were featured on the national news. 19 residential properties were slated for demolition by FEMA as well as a bank branch, health care center and the towns' supermarket (we became a food desert for 2 years).
